BUILDING BRIDGES:
YOUR COMMUNITY AND LABOR REPORT presents
The
Other New York City
Working New York
Produced
by Ken Nash and Mimi Rosenberg
Introduction:
New York City to most Americans at first summons images of huge skyscrapers
and theaters, museums and parks. But there is another New York City of
workers' struggles just to get by and for justice on the job. This New
York City is not that much different from the rest of America, for in
both, workers struggle each day just to get by. The five vignettes which
comprise this program bring together a number of different stories from
that struggle.
And
the Rich Get Richer:
We explore the growing income inequality combined with stagnation of real
income for most of us.
City
Workers Speak Out:
New York City municipal workers sacrificed in lean years to help balance
the budget, but now that times and the new contract is being negotiated,
Mayor Giuliani is still demanding sacrifices.
Sweatshop
Fire Tragedy:
We bring you to a protest at the site of a garment sweatshop fire which
killed one immigrant worker and injured two others.
It
Ain't Sweet:
Workers at the Domino Sugar Refinery in Brooklyn tell you why they have
been on strike fo rnine months and why Domino should be boycotted.
It's
Justice Time at the Apollo:
Musicians Local 802 with community and labor supporters throughout the
city staged a demonstration for Ray Chew and the Crew, the Harlem theater's
house band that has not had a raise in eight years and is demanding union
recognition.
